On August 1, the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games kicked off with athletes in the Age Group divisions taking the field to determine The Fittest on Earth®. With age groups ranging from 14-15 to 65+, these elite athletes continue to provide prime examples of the health and fitness benefits of consistent, dedicated training.
As time marches on, several athletes have “aged out” and entered new categories, including 2022 Girls (14-15) champion Lucy McGonigle and 2022 Boys (14-15) champion RJ Mestre. Mestre has the added challenge of facing off against the reigning Boys (16-17) champion, Ty Jenkins. Meanwhile, the Girls (16-17) title is undefended as 2022 champion Olivia Kerstetter has entered the Individual Women division.
Similarly, two-time defending Women (40-44) champion Kelly Friel has entered the Women (45-49) division and looks to continue her title streak by claiming the vacant crown. 2022 Women (45-49) winner Ali Crawford is not competing in the 2023 Games.
In an unfortunate development, Men (60-64) defending champion Shannon Aiken withdrew from the current competition, for undisclosed reasons during the Gymnastic Chipper event. This will put that title in new hands for 2023.
The field of competitors — two Teen divisions and seven Masters divisions — will compete in multiple events from Tuesday, August 1 through Wednesday, August, 3 to determine this year’s champions. The leaderboard will be updated throughout the Games as events progress.
The final day of competition is at hand for the Age Group athletes. With two events remaining, precious points are at stake in the remaining chances to shuffle their standings on the leaderboard.
Several defending champions have, so far, made a strong claim to their titles. Other athletes have surged ahead to capture vacant crowns.
The final day of the 2023 CrossFit Games begins with an intense test of total-body endurance. Athletes will compete for time through a circuit of: 50-calorie SkiErg, 50-calorie Echo Bike, 75 double-unders, 50-calorie SkiErg, 50-calorie C2 Bike, and 75 double-unders.
This event is scheduled to begin at 9:44 a.m. CST. Results will be updated as they become available.
The competitive field was shaping up as athletes enter the second day of competition with an understanding of their position on the overall leaderboard. The Games continued with three more workouts on the penultimate day of the contest where the top contenders looked to take a commanding lead, aware that surprise performances may shake up the boards.
After a well-earned afternoon of recovery, the second day of the 2023 CrossFit Games concluded with a classic 5K run. Competitors in age groups (14-15) to (50-54) had a 30-minute time cap. The (55-59), (60-64), and (65+) age groups had no time limit.
Athletes completed a test of gymnastic and body weight fundamentals. The series of nine exercises was performed for time with a 15-minute time cap: 48-foot handstand walk, 30 box jumps, 30 GHD sit-ups, 30 single-leg squats, 30 toes-to-bars, 30 single-leg squats, 30 GHD sit-ups, 30 box jumps, 48-foot handstand walk.
The second day of the 2023 CrossFit Games included a medley to challenge the strength, endurance, and power of their back and posterior chain. Athletes performed three rounds for time with a 13-minute time cap: 3 rope climbs, 10 deadlifts, a 42-foot sled pull, and a 126-foot sled push.
The first day of the 2023 CrossFit Games kicked off bright and early at 9 a.m. CST with the Age Group division and Adaptive division running events concurrently (against their own respective divisions).
The Age Group division’s opening event was a two-part challenge. The competitors were first required to complete a traditional, if rushed, Olympic weightlifting total — with three minutes to work up to a one-repetition max (1RM) in the snatch followed by three minutes to reach a 1RM clean & jerk.
After one brief minute’s rest from the previous event, each division performed a series of exercises for time, with an 18-minute time cap: 84-foot farmer’s carry to Pig*, 21 burpee Pig jump-over, farmer’s carry around three dummies, 50 wall ball shots, 50-calorie row, 50 wall ball shots, farmer’s carry around three dummies, 21 burpee Pig jump-over, 84-foot farmer’s carry.
*Note: The Pig is a specialized piece of equipment nearly eight-feet tall, three-feet wide, 20-inches high, and weighing several hundred pounds.
The CrossFit athletes were tasked with performing a benchmark WOD recognizable to any elite competitor or recreational athlete who’s familiar with CrossFit training.
Helen: Three rounds for time: 400-meter run, 21 kettlebell swings, and 12 pull-ups.
